Custom Shorts Manufacturer in China: Denim, Tailored & Casual
Shorts are the unsung hero of a women's range — high rotation, easy to reorder, and the single category where a small fit or fabric mistake shows up fastest. Denim cut-offs, tailored city shorts, relaxed linen casuals, and sporty biker and pleated styles all look simple, but each has its own wash, rise and construction traps. This guide is how to brief and source a custom shorts manufacturer in China without those traps.
We manufacture custom shorts from our Guangzhou factory — rigid and comfort-stretch denim, clean cotton twill and poplin, breathable linen, and elevated satin and crepe for evening looks. If you already know the category, jump straight to our shorts manufacturing page.
What Counts as "Shorts"?
For a fashion brand, the shorts category spans far more than a single denim pair. The main styles buyers source:
- Denim shorts — rigid and comfort-stretch cut-offs, boyfriend and tailored denim with wash options.
- Tailored shorts — crisp cotton twill or poplin city shorts with a clean, structured hand.
- Casual & linen shorts — relaxed summer shorts with natural drape and a breathable hand-feel.
- Biker & active shorts — sporty, second-skin and pleated styles for casual and athleisure ranges.
- Evening shorts — satin and crepe shorts with controlled sheen for warm-night looks.
They share one manufacturing problem: a wrong rise, wash or fabric makes them gape, bag at the seat, or lose shape after one wash. The rest of this article is how to spec around that.
Why Manufacture Shorts in China
China remains the most efficient place to make shorts at brand scale, for three reasons specific to this category:
| Factor | Why it matters for shorts |
|---|---|
| Denim & trim ecosystem | Rigid and stretch denim, hardware (rivets, buttons, drawcords) and washes are all stock capabilities in Guangdong — you are not paying premiums on a basics fabric. |
| Low MOQ flexibility | Shorts are a high-reorder category, so a small first drop is low risk. Our MOQ guide explains how 100 pcs per style per colour lets you test a mix before scaling. |
| ODM speed | Starting from an existing short block and changing rise, length, wash and hardware is far faster than a full tech pack. Sampling runs 10–15 days. |
For the engagement model — send a tech pack (OEM) or adapt an existing style (ODM / private label)? — see our OEM vs ODM guide.
Fabrics & Washes for Shorts
Shorts live or die on structure, recovery and wash stability. Specifying the fabric family and wash up front is what keeps the garment from bagging or fading unevenly:
| Style / use | Material | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Denim | Rigid or comfort-stretch denim, 8–12 oz | Structure and recovery; wash options from raw to bleach |
| Tailored | Cotton twill or poplin, 160–220 gsm | Crisp, clean hand for city shorts |
| Casual / summer | Linen or linen blend, 130–180 gsm | Breathable, relaxed drape |
| Evening | Satin or crepe, 120–160 gsm | Controlled sheen and elegant drape |
For statement drops, placement and all-over prints, tonal or contrast embroidery, and custom hardware such as rivets, buttons and drawcords are all in scope. We run a wash-and-recovery check on denim before bulk — that is the test most factories skip and the one that prevents shorts that look great on the sample and baggy after one wear.
How to Brief Shorts (Spec Fields That Get Misread)
Hand the factory a reference photo and "make it like this" and you will get a guess. Brief these fields and the guess disappears:
| Field | Vague (misread) | Unambiguous (made right) |
|---|---|---|
| Fit / rise | "High waist" | Mid-to-high rise, 11 cm front rise, no gap at centre back |
| Denim | "Stretchy denim" | 98% cotton / 2% elastane, 10 oz, comfort stretch, enzyme wash |
| Length | "Short" | 5 cm inseam, graded +0.5 cm per size up |
| Hardware | "Nice buttons" | Natural shell button, 12 mm, colour-matched; rivets at stress points |
| Construction | "Neat seams" | Flat-felled outseam on denim, clean-finished hem, bar-tack pockets |
Our tech-pack guide walks through what to include per page. Send the tech pack before you ask for a quote — a quote without a spec is a guess you pay for later in revisions.
MOQ, Pricing & Lead Time
Three numbers define the order. Confirm all three in the quotation, not just the unit price:
- MOQ — 100 pieces per style per colour; sizes split across the run at no charge. Read how clothing MOQ works before you negotiate.
- Price — a quoted FOB should list fabric, CM (cut-make), trims and wash separately so you can see what moves. Our quotation reading guide explains every line.
- Lead time — sampling is 10–15 days; bulk runs 10–15 days after sample approval. The full lead-time breakdown shows where the days go.
Private Label & Packaging
Every shorts order ships retail-ready: your woven main label, wash-care label, size label, and branded polybag. For denim, hardware finishing and rivet placement matter — a sharp rivet against skin or a misaligned button is noticeable, so we bar-tack stress points and colour-match hardware by default. Tell us your label spec in the tech pack, or use ours.
The 4 Shorts Failures (and How to Avoid Them)
- Baggy at the seat — caused by low-recovery denim or a wrong rise. Specify elastane content and run a recovery check before bulk.
- Gaping waistband — caused by a misgraded rise. Confirm centre-back fit on the PP sample across your size run.
- Uneven denim fade — caused by an uncontrolled wash. Specify the wash and approve a wash panel before bulk.
- Scratchy hardware — move labelling off contact lines and colour-match and smooth-finish rivets and buttons.
Most of these are caught at the PP (pre-production) sample. Our sampling process guide covers exactly what to approve before bulk.
Protect Your Design When You Brief the Factory
Sharing the shorts collection is necessary, but it is also your IP. Send the full tech pack only after a signed NDA and a paid sample, watermark early-stage sketches, and keep the originals — the factory only needs the pages it will cut and sew from. Our IP protection guide covers NDAs and what to do if a style appears elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MOQ for custom shorts?
100 pieces per style per colour. Shorts are a low-risk, high-reorder category, so many brands start with a small mix of denim, tailored and casual styles, then scale the winners.
Can I start from an existing style instead of a tech pack?
Yes, and it is the faster route. Pick a base — a tailored short, a denim cut-off, a linen casual — tell us what to change (rise, length, wash, hardware) and we quote and sample from there. Full tech packs are welcome but not required.
Which fabrics and washes work best for shorts?
We specify weight and hand-feel up front: rigid and comfort-stretch denim (with wash options), cotton twill and poplin for tailored looks, linen and blends for summer casuals, and satin or crepe for evening shorts. Each is chosen for structure and warm-weather comfort.
Can you do prints, embroidery and hardware detailing?
Yes — placement and all-over prints, tonal and contrast embroidery, and custom hardware such as rivets, buttons and drawcords are all in scope. Send reference images and we confirm what is production-feasible.
How long does sampling take?
10–15 days for a development sample after fabric and specs are confirmed. Bulk runs 10–15 days after sample approval.
Do you ship DDP / delivered?
No. We ship FOB from a Chinese port with full export documentation; your freight forwarder handles the international leg. We can introduce forwarders for comparison but do not quote delivered prices.
