Sports Bra Manufacturer in China: Support Levels, Cups & MOQ

Oct 17, 20269 min readBy Essty Garment

A sports bra is the hardest garment in an activewear line to get right — and the one most brands get wrong. Support, cup structure and fabric recovery decide whether a customer re-orders or quietly switches brands after one wash. Most buyers ask a factory "can you make a sports bra?" when the real question is "can you make the right support level, cup and fabric for my customer, at a workable MOQ?" This guide walks through what to specify, what to ask a sports bra manufacturer in China, and how low-MOQ private label actually works — the same know-how behind our yoga wear manufacturer line and the yoga & activewear collection.

Support Levels: Light, Medium, High

The first decision is how much support the bra must deliver. Get this wrong and a high-impact runner ends up in a light-support bralette, or a yogi gets over-compressed in a high-impact cage. Define the level by activity, not by price:

LevelBest forConstructionCompression
LightYoga, Pilates, walking, loungingUnlined or lightly lined, wide band, pulloverLow — holds in place, no squeeze
MediumGym, cycling, hiking, danceUnderband + racerback, light cup, keyholeModerate — reduces bounce ~50%
HighRunning, HIIT, jumping, court sportsEncapsulation + compression, padded straps, bonded seamsFirm — reduces bounce 70%+
Spec the level as an outcome, not a name. "High support" means different things to different factories. Write "reduces bounce 70%+ in a 5km run, holds cup in place during burpees" — that drives the underband width, strap anchoring and seam type far more reliably than a single word. The same outcome-first logic carries into our two-piece set manufacturing and dress lines.

Cups: Molded, Sewn-In Pad, or Removable

The cup is where comfort and returns are won or lost. There are three structures, each with a clear trade-off:

TypeFeelBest forWatch-out
Molded (pre-formed)Smooth, shaping, no pad shiftMedium/high support, premium setsNeeds correct cup size; wrong shell looks bulky
Sewn-in padSoft, no removal, no lost padsLight/medium, everydayHarder to relayer; less adjustable
Removable (pocketed)Adjustable, easy careAll levels, first retail runsPads migrate in wash if pocket is shallow

For a first production run, a removable pad in a deep pocket is the lowest-risk choice: the customer can adjust, and you avoid the returns that come from a molded cup that fits one body shape only. When the fit is proven, move to molded for a premium line.

Fabric: Nylon-Spandex and the Recovery Number

A sports bra lives or dies on fabric recovery — how fast it springs back after a stretch. Write the blend, the GSM and the spandex percentage in the tech pack, because "nylon-spandex" alone tells the factory nothing:

BlendSpandexGSMBest for
78% nylon / 22% spandex22%200–220High-support, sculpting, butt-lift
80% nylon / 20% spandex20%180–200Everyday medium-support sets
75% nylon / 25% spandex25%210–230High-impact, fuller-bust containment
Modal / Tencel blend5–8%160–180Light-support, heat-prone markets
Do not let "nylon-spandex" be the whole spec. A 12% spandex shell will bag at the band within a month of wear; a modal blend with too little elastane loses its shape after two washes. Spec the blend, GSM and recovery expectation in writing so bulk matches the approved sample — the same discipline we apply in our custom yoga leggings and the squat-proof opacity testing guide.

Construction Details That Matter

Sizing & Fit: Full-Bust and Plus-Size

Sports bras are usually graded in S–XL by bust, but fuller-bust and plus-size buyers need a different approach — band and cup scale at different rates. Grade before the first sample, not after the first complaint:

ProfileGrade noteSupport priority
Standard S–XLBand + cup scale togetherBalanced, everyday
Fuller-bust (DD+)Wider band, deeper cup, side supportContainment without squeeze
Plus-size 1X–5XExtended grading, wider bandHold shape, no roll

Our Africa plus-size manufacturing and Middle East modest wear collection already grade for fuller and extended bodies, so a sports bra for those markets slots into the same size logic. A bra that fits a fuller bust is also the basis for a modest, full-coverage activewear set.

Never "scale up" a straight-size bra. Simply enlarging an S cup to 3X makes the band too loose and the cup too shallow — the bra rides up and offers no support. Use proper extended grading with a wider, firmer band.

MOQ, Lead Time & FOB

A sports bra follows the same low-MOQ logic as the rest of the catalogue — prove the fit small, then re-order the same programme:

ParameterStandardNote
MOQ100 pcs per style / colourBra + coordinating legging = two styles
Lead time10–15 daysFrom approved sample
Price basisFOB from $4.08China port; freight by your forwarder
Re-orderProgramme locked3rd order matches the 1st

We quote FOB (China port) only — we do not pretend to be a door-to-door (DDP) shipper. You appoint your own freight forwarder; we prepare the export documents (commercial invoice, packing list, HS code, certificate of origin) so your side clears cleanly at Jebel Ali, Jeddah or elsewhere.

Private Label & Custom

How an Order Flows

  1. Quote — send a support brief or reference photo; we return FOB per style/colour with fabric and MOQ.
  2. Sample — we sew one bra, run the recovery and opacity check, ship it for fit approval (10–15 days).
  3. Bulk — on approval, production slots in; same pattern, same dyed lot, locked for re-order.
  4. Ship — FOB China port, full export docs, your forwarder takes it from there.
Approve the sample on a real body in a real workout, not on a hanger. A bra that looks fine flat can ride up at the band or shift at the cup once you move. The sample is cheap insurance against a 300-piece mistake — and it is where the recovery and fit checks get signed off in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What support level do I need for my sports bra?

Match the level to activity: light for yoga, Pilates and walking; medium for gym, cycling and hiking; high for running, HIIT and court sports. The real control is an outcome — "reduces bounce 70% in a run" — not the word "high," because factories interpret support levels differently.

Molded cup or sewn-in pad — which is better?

For a first retail run, a removable pad in a deep pocket is lowest-risk: the customer can adjust and you avoid returns from a molded cup that fits one shape only. Move to a molded cup for a premium line once the fit is proven. Sewn-in pads sit between, soft but less adjustable.

What fabric is best for a high-support sports bra?

A nylon-spandex blend of 75–80% nylon with 20–25% spandex at 200–230 GSM gives firm recovery for high-impact containment. The control number is spandex percentage and GSM, not just "nylon-spandex" — spec it in the tech pack so bulk matches the approved sample.

How is sports bra sizing handled for fuller-bust and plus-size buyers?

Grade for two profiles: fuller-bust (DD+) needs a wider band, deeper cup and side support, while plus-size buyers need extended 1X–5X grading with a firmer band that holds shape. Never scale up a straight-size bra — it loosens the band and shallow the cup so the bra offers no support.

How are shipments priced?

FOB from a China port, from $4.08. We prepare the commercial invoice, packing list, HS code and certificate of origin; your freight forwarder handles international transit and destination clearance. We do not quote DDP or door-to-door, so the landed cost stays in your control.
