Activewear Private Label: Logos, Heat Transfer & Custom Packaging

Oct 19, 20269 min readBy Essty Garment

A private-label activewear brand is built as much on what the customer sees in their hands as on the garment itself. The logo, the label and the unboxing are what turn a generic legging into "my brand" — and they are also the easiest things to get wrong when you brief a factory. Most new brands ask "can you add my logo?" when the real questions are where the logo goes, which method survives 50 washes, and how the packaging supports the price you charge. This guide walks through the options a Chinese activewear factory can deliver, and how to specify them so bulk matches your approved sample — the same know-how behind our yoga wear manufacturer line and the two-piece set manufacturing programme.

Logo Placement & Methods

Before picking a method, decide the placement. Location drives cost, durability and the way the brand reads in photos. Lock it in the tech pack, not in a verbal note:

PlacementTypical useBest methodNote
Waistband centreLeggings, bike shortsHeat transfer or woven labelMost-seen logo spot in mirror selfies
Back neck / hemSet tops, brasWoven label or printed care labelSoft, no skin irritation
Sleeve or side seamJackets, long-sleeveEmbroidery or heat transferSmall mark, premium feel
Inner waistbandBrand secret / sizePrinted size sticker or wovenDiscreet, sizing reference
Give the factory a placement map, not a logo file alone. A single PNG with "put it here" arrow avoids the classic mismatch where the logo lands 2 cm too high or gets mirrored. The same map-and-approve discipline carries into our dress lines and every custom programme — approve the placement on the sample, not in the chat.

Heat Transfer vs Woven vs Embroidery

These three cover 95% of activewear branding. Each trades off cost, feel and durability:

MethodFeelDurabilityMOQ impact
Heat transfer (vinyl / puff)Flat, can be glossyGood if high-quality film; cheap film cracksNone — no setup cost
Woven labelSoft, premiumExcellent, permanentNeeds a label mould (one-time)
EmbroideryRaised, tactileExcellent, but adds weightDigitising fee per design
Screen / sublimation printBreathable, all-overGood on synthetic blendsBest for all-over patterns

For a first low-MOQ run, heat transfer + a woven label is the sensible combo: the transfer gives a bold visible mark at zero setup cost, while the woven label carries the brand name softly at the neck. Move to embroidery for a premium line once volumes justify the digitising fee.

Do not let the factory substitute a cheap transfer film. Low-grade vinyl cracks and peels after a handful of washes, and the first returns will be "your logo fell off." Specify the film grade (or accept the factory's named grade) and wash-test the sample 20+ times before bulk. The same "test before bulk" rule applies to our custom yoga leggings and the squat-proof opacity testing routine.

Custom Packaging: From Polybag to Mailer Box

Packaging is where a $9 FOB legging can be presented as a $45 retail product. Four tiers, from minimal to premium:

TierContainsCost addWhen to use
Polybag onlyGarment + adhesive size stickerLowestWholesale, reorder-heavy
+ Belly bandPrinted wrap around the folded itemLowD2C starter, shelf-ready
+ Care insert / cardWash care + brand story cardLow–midBuilds brand recall
Mailer boxRigid box, tissue, thank-you noteMid–highPremium D2C, gifting

A belly band + care card is the sweet spot for most new brands: it lifts perceived value dramatically for a few cents per unit, and it survives shipping without the volume of a full box. If you sell via Amazon or a 3PL, confirm the pack fits their inbound spec before committing to a box.

Brand Identity Beyond the Logo

MOQ, Lead Time & FOB

Private-label branding rides on the same low-MOQ logic as the rest of the catalogue:

ParameterStandardNote
MOQ100 pcs per style / colourLabel & packaging artwork is one-time setup
Lead time10–15 daysFrom approved sample (incl. branded sample)
Price basisFOB from $4.08China port; freight by your forwarder
Re-orderProgramme locked3rd order matches the 1st, labels included

We quote FOB (China port) only — we do not act as a door-to-door (DDP) shipper. You appoint your own freight forwarder; we prepare the export documents (commercial invoice, packing list, HS code, certificate of origin) so your side clears cleanly at Jebel Ali, Jeddah or elsewhere. Custom packaging and labels are produced alongside the garment, so there is no separate inbound consolidation step for you to manage.

How an Order Flows

  1. Quote — send your logo, target placement and packaging tier; we return FOB per style/colour with branding add-on.
  2. Sample — we sew the garment with the actual heat-transfer/woven label and pack it in your belly band or box, then ship for approval (10–15 days).
  3. Bulk — on approval, production slots in; same pattern, same dyed lot, same branding, locked for re-order.
  4. Ship — FOB China port, full export docs, your forwarder takes it from there.
Approve the branded sample, not a blank one. A plain sample tells you the fit; only the branded sample tells you whether the transfer aligned, the label sat soft against skin, and the box actually closed. That approval is where the logo placement and packaging get signed off in writing — cheap insurance against a 300-piece rework.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best logo method for a first activewear run?

For a first low-MOQ run, heat transfer at the waistband plus a woven label at the neck is the sensible combo: the transfer is bold and costs nothing to set up, while the woven label carries the brand name softly. Move to embroidery for a premium line once volumes justify the digitising fee.

Will a heat-transfer logo survive washing?

Only if the film grade is specified. High-quality transfer film holds up well; cheap vinyl cracks and peels after a few washes and triggers returns. Name the grade (or accept the factory's named grade) and wash-test the sample 20+ times before bulk to confirm.

How much does custom packaging add to the cost?

A polybag with an adhesive size sticker is the lowest cost. Adding a printed belly band and care card lifts perceived value for a few cents per unit — the sweet spot for most new brands. A rigid mailer box with tissue is mid-to-high add and best for premium D2C or gifting.

Do I need a high MOQ to get my own labels and packaging?

No. The garment MOQ stays at 100 pcs per style/colour; the label artwork and packaging are one-time setup, not per-order minimums. Re-orders reuse the locked artwork at no extra setup, so the programme stays consistent from the first run.

How are shipments priced for a private-label order?

FOB from a China port, from $4.08, with branding and packaging produced alongside the garment. We prepare the commercial invoice, packing list, HS code and certificate of origin; your freight forwarder handles international transit and destination clearance. We do not quote DDP or door-to-door, so landed cost stays in your control.
